A sense of excitement and an appreciation for dance music’s colourful past can be felt in all that Toshiki Ohta does. His entry into the Crack Mix series is no exception.
Whether he’s co-hosting on NTS Radio’s Sacred Pools show alongside DJ October and Faso or playing out at clubs such as Patterns in Brighton – where he’s currently a resident – the Japan-born, US-raised DJ’s creative output is imbued with an exuberance that’s as bright as it is infectious. Based in the UK since the late 80s, Ohta’s sets are peppered with a medley of underground sounds that dominated during his formative years; breakbeat, jungle and acid-tinged cuts among those he most frequently spins.
For his Crack Mix, Ohta homes in on “breakbeat and 4×4 with an MC (mostly hip-house and ragga) from 1987 to present day, from all over the world.”
“Hopefully the way it has been mixed shows old records in a new context,” says Ohta. “I had a lot of fun putting this together, hope you enjoy the ride. It was recorded on my spare room floor using three CDJs whilst I was isolating and sick with Covid.”
Toshiki Ohta next plays Patterns, Brighton, on 19 February alongside Helena Hauff
