Crack Mix 396:
TYGAPAW

Pop

As a DJ, producer, designer and party promoter Dion McKenzie, better known as TYGAPAW is a one-person army on a mission to highlight inclusivity and displacement through sound.

An immigrant from Mandeville, Jamaica, she moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn in 2002 and has continued to head up New York’s queer nightlife scene. Tired of male dominated DJ circuits, the self-taught producer founded popular club nights Fake Accent, Shottas and No Badmind; creating spaces for queer and trans Caribbean people with the former being developed into an imprint label to embed more black artists into the electronic music scene. Her musical style evolved from her cross-continental journey, drawing from the raw energy of dancehall and infusing it with her signature production sound of emotional club bangers.

For this mix, TYGAPAW runs through an artillery of techno laced with 90’s R&B motifs, pop ballads and nostalgic acapellas or she describes “The ravey side of techno & house”.
