Death Is Not The End is a London-based label and NTS Radio residency.
It was born out of a desire to shine a light on some of the archival blues and gospel field recordings its founder Luke Owen was excavating in the 2010s. Back then, Owen was drawn to material which had what he calls an “unembellished emotion” about it. It’s an ethos that continues to guide him.
While the label and its focuses have grown and evolved in the years since its launch, Owen continues to pair an academic, ethnomusicological approach with some seriously good and often overlooked musical output. Among his various projects Owen recently embarked on a three-volume deep dive into 1950s and 60s Jamaican doo-wop and R&B – making him, as well as the charming material, a natural choice for a special Valentine’s Day mix.
“To celebrate Valentine’s Day and the third and final instalment of If I Had a Pair of Wings, I’ve put together a dusty selection of Jamaican doo-wop heartbreakers taken from the series – all run through a healthy dose of tape delay,” said Owen.
