Saint-Étienne-born producer and DJ E-Unity curates an hour’s worth of emotional bangers for our latest specialist mix.
Constructed from lamenting vocal samples, mournful club cuts and ambient works from artists such as Fatima Al Qadiri, Burial, Sky H1 and dj lostboi (AKA Malibu), the recording takes on a collage-like structure as it moves through classics and unknown sounds, genres old and new, and all shades of emotions.
According to its creator – who has a knockout new release, BBB<3, on the way via Simo Cell’s TEMƎT imprint – the mix is inspired by the sounds that lead to his own entryway into music production. “I [remember when I] discovered completely new sounds from the UK: future garage, post-dubstep and all these new scenes making links between sub-heavy genres and poppier sounds,” says E-Unity. “It just blew my mind.”
“More than ten years later and through a much wider musical spectrum, I realise that one of the things that I love in these sounds is the use of vocal elements that give emotional and cathartic qualities to the music,” he continues. “I’m calling this mix Voices of Pathos and it’s focused on the use of fragments of voice, pitched or not, spoken or sung. It includes laments, whispers samples and synths mimicking the human voice. Hope it will be as cathartic to listen to as it was to make!”
