Selections: John Maus

Welcome back to Selections, a series of exclusive artist-curated Spotify playlists from those in the know.

In a recent interview for Crack Magazine, John Maus itemised some of his disparate influences and inspirations: music from the Chinese Cultural Revolution, “the echoes of Western triadic, harmonic conventions”, mid-Renaissance sounds and KPM Music from the 70s.

Famed for his inquisitive and scholarly mind, we jumped on the chance to dig into the synth-pop experimentalist’s record collection. Ahead of his performance at Bristol’s Simple Things Festival this weekend, and the release of Screen Memories – his first album in six years – Maus hand selects a list of cuts from collaborator Ariel Pink, The Space Lady, Andy Clark, Geneva Jacuzzi and more.

Maus plays Simple Things Festival on 21 October.
