Machine Woman is a participating artist of the SHAPE platform for innovative music and audiovisual art, supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. Much has been made of the contrast between Machine Woman’s deadly-serious moniker and her sometimes irreverent take on dance music: last year’s Genau House EP included I Can Mend Your Broken Heart, a track reportedly inspired by a train-wreck of a tinder date, and her RA page lists ‘DJ Away Game’ and ‘DJ Half Price Lager’ as alternative aliases.
Such antics express certain side-eye in the direction of dance music’s dogmatic seriousness, the Russian-born producer isn’t merely sniping from the sidelines – with a busy gigging schedule and regular shows on BCR and Bristol’s Noods Radio, she’s well-placed to satirise its conventions.
Machine Woman – real name Anastasia Vtorova – describes her production as a habitual process, and while her official output is confined to a couple of cassette releases and a duo of fantastically nuanced EPs for Where To Now? and Peder Mannerfelt’s eponymous label it’s evident that she’s in possession of a growing arsenal of unreleased gold.
Machine Woman’s Crack Mix – entitled 100% Loop Packs, 100% Presets, 100 BMP – goes some way to scratching the surface – an intriguing glimpse into the process of one of the most exciting and elusive producers out there.
