Actress has mixed the next DJ Kicks. Following on from Nina Kraviz’s hypnotic instalment, the Werkdiscs boss and typically confounding producer will follow in the footsteps of Kode9, John Talabot and Motor City Drum Ensemble in contributing to !K7’s seminal mix release series.
Lauded for his experimental tendencies on albums such as Hazyville, R.I.P. and Ghettoville, this will be Darren Cunningham’s first official mix release. The tracklist features classics from the likes of Ron Trent and Chez Damier’s Chez n Trent collaboration, and newer material from Milan ambient trance artist Lorenzo Senni and UK experimentalist Beneath. It also features a previously unreleased track from Actress, one which he wrote soon after the completion of Ghettoville.
As Cunningham explains in the press release, “When I’m selecting music I’m not always thinking about the music alone. I’m thinking about the names of the artists, tracks, and labels, and what they mean to me. I often base my tracklisting purely on how the track titles work together in a poetic sense,” adding, “I’ve tried to keep space between the tracks, allowing them to speak.”
!K7 are set to release Actress’ DJ Kicks as both a mixed CD and split double vinyl on 4 May. Check out the tracklist below.
