The album will source vocal samples from little-known Youtube videos
Potential will be the follow up to Brooklyn-based producer James Hinton’s 2013 debut LP Nonfiction and will expand on his unusual take on sampling. While Nonfiction lifted imperfect bars from amateur rappers and paired samples of people speaking with his emotive, precision-engineered arrangements, Potential will be full of vocal samples sourced exclusively from Youtube.
Hinton has said of the Youtube videos: “They’re powerful when you consider their context. It’s just a single person by themselves in a room delivering the line. The thing I’m gonna be obsessed with is that person’s story leading up to that video and the moment that they turned the camera off.”
Potential is due out on March 18 on Domino and will be released alongside a documentary by Daniel Kaufman that investigates the stories of the vocalists featured on the album. Listen to single Florida and watch the trailer for the documentary below:
