A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, André 3000 and more pay tribute to Phife Dawg

D’Angelo, the Roots, Chuck D, KRS-One, Consequence, and Busta Rhymes also saluted the late rapper at the Apollo Theater

Phife Dawg’s legacy was honoured at a tribute to the late rapper at New York’s Apollo Theater last night (5 April). A Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West, André 3000, D’Angelo, the Roots, Chuck D, KRS-One, Consequence, Busta Rhymes and more shared personal stories of Phife Dawg’s influence on their lives and careers, and friends and family also offered moving personal eulogies.

As well as delivering emotional speeches, artists also paid tribute to the star through performances. D’Angelo performed Carole King’s You’ve Got a Friend backed by the Roots, singer Kelly Price sang traditional worship song Because He Lives, and KRS-One, Kid Capri, Grandmaster Flash, Teddy Ted and Special K honored the rapper with a rendition of I’m Still #1 including a heartfelt freestyle about Phife.
