Dean Blunt reveals more information on upcoming film projects

The former Hype Williams member opened up in a rare interview with NPR

Earlier this year Dean Blunt revealed his plans to make a stoner action movie set in Atlanta and has now revealed that he is also working on a remake. The enigmatic performer has said he plans to rejig Hollywood Shuffle a 1980s satirical comedy focussing on the portrayal of black people in the American media.

“I’m doing a re-make of Hollywood Shuffle. I’m making it myself, so I’m out here.” Blunt tells NPR, “Hollywood Shuffle is an old film they made — I think it’s an ’80s film. I don’t know who it was by. It’s like one of the first black satirical comedies I’ve ever seen — American black satirical comedies. And it’s when Eddie Murphy was a stereotype actor for black acting in America. And this film, it’s a parody of that. Everyone is cast as Eddie Murphy. There’s a long audition, and they always want the guy to be Eddie Murphy. It’s a pretty funny film. I can’t afford the original actors, so I’ve found look-alikes of each. And yeah, it cost just about enough.”

Elsewhere in the interview Blunt gives typically off-key answers to questions on all aspects of his work, his experiences with transcendental meditation and more. Read the feature in full here.

Today also marks the release of Blunt’s debut album with Babyfather on Hyperdub.
