The Against Me! singer set the document alight in North Carolina, where a bathroom exclusion law has caused controversy
Laura Jane Grace showed a crowd what she thought of her legally-assigned gender at the band’s North Carolina show last night by setting her birth certificate alight.
Much to the excitement of the crowd, who clapped and cheered at the act of defiance, the punk protagonist chose the NC show to make the statement as it has been the focal point of discussion around trans rights since the introduction of a controversial new law that bans trans people from using certain public bathrooms that don’t align with their birth certificate-listed “biological sex”.
While some artists, including Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr, chose to cancel their shows in opposition to the new law, Laura Jane Grace told Buzzfeed she thought it was more important to perform than ever before, saying “visibility is more important than ever; to go there and have the platform of a stage to stand on and speak your mind and represent yourself.”
