After the drop of his intimate album cover earlier this week, Dev Hynes has unveiled a long-awaited release date

Dev Hynes has announced the release date for his new album, Freetown Sound, as 1 July.

He revealed the cover art, shot by New York-based photographer Deana Lawson, late last week, and accompanied it with a series of tweets detailing the album’s target audience: “My album is for every1 told they’re not black enough, 2 black, 2 queer, not queer the right way, the under appreciated,” he wrote. “it’s a clapback.”

Press materials promise that this will be “a tour de force, a confluence of Hynes’ past, present, and future that melds his influences with his own established musical voice”, and for more of a taste of how the new album will sound, a new website, slated as a “sneak peek into the album’s world”, loops vintage footage, music videos, Hynes himself dancing in a studio, cityscapes, and more over a sonic meld of new music from the album and Hynes’ musical influences.

We picked Freetown Sound as one of the albums you won’t be able to avoid this summer. Check out that list here.
