Watch Werner Herzog analysing Kanye West’s Famous video

“I have never seen anything like this,” the German visionary muses as he contemplates a naked cast of Donald Trump

German screenwriter, film director, author, actor and opera director Werner Herzog has gamely stepped up to the plate for The Daily Beast to share his thoughts on Kanye West’s most provocative video to date.

The visuals for Famous gained notoriety upon its Tidal-only release in June for its use of seemingly nude celebrities sharing a bed – who are, on closer inspection, wax figurines. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, Chris Brown, and Kanye himself are among those portrayed. Taylor Swift’s inclusion has since become even more scandalous – as well as getting a name-check from Kanye on the track itself (“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous”) that Swift then addressed during her Grammys speech after saying she didn’t know anything about the track until it came out, Kim Kardashian has since outed Swift as a liar via a recorded chat between Swift and West that proved she knew about the namecheck after all. Phew.

Herzog, seemingly spared of all the initial media madness around the video, offers a purer view of the mise en scène it presents. Speaking about doppelgängers, the purity of breathing, and Kanye’s obvious eye for detail, he is effusive in his praise for the video, and ends up mentioning that if Kanye would like to attend his film school, he’d be more than welcome.
