Stormzy dropped by Radio 1’s Live Lounge earlier today and – for his cover – he took on a modern classic.
Covering Ultralight Beam, the gospel opener from Kanye West’s 2016 LP The Life of Pablo, Stormzy spat a previously unheard verse which featured a poignant reference to Damilola Taylor, the London schoolboy who was killed in 2000.
At the end of the performance, Stormzy said on mic, “This is what happens when South London meets salvation.”
Speaking about the song before the cover, he said, “I love the message of the song. I love the musicality of the song. It’s one of my favorite songs.”
