Jeremy Corbyn takes to the stage before a Libertines show

Well, that was one unexpected surprise act

Since the snap general election was announced, the Labour leader has experienced a surge of popularity amongst the grime scene, with MCs – such as Novelist, AJ Tracey, JME and Akala – voicing their support on Twitter. Subsequently, their support has inspired the emergence of pro-Corbyn posters in London and the website Grime 4 Corbyn.

Now, Corbyn’s campaign trail has seen him connect with the indie scene. As documented on his Snapchat feed, the MP made a brief appearance at Wirral before a Libertines gig, informing the 16,500 strong crowd on his policy of making Premier League football clubs invest five percent back into grassroots football. The event took place at Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park.

“I love football and I want it for everybody,” he declared. “Do you know what I want to have after this election? Those very wealthy clubs in the Premiership pay your five percent so we’ve got grassroots football for everyone.”

Libertines drummer Gary Powell has since tweeted about the speech. Scroll down for Corbyn’s statement on the event, and check out the Twitter reactions below.
