MTV set to reboot Total Request Live

The veteran music broadcaster is reviving Total Request Live after nine years off-air

TRL is returning to the airwaves. The music show, which ran for a decade from 1998 to 2008, was the epicentre of US pop music, helping to forge the careers of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Aaliyah.

Presented by Carson Daly and famous for drawing onlookers to its studio home in Times Square, pop fans of a certain age will remember such cultural earthquakes as that time when Mark Wahlberg called Eminem an asshole, when Mariah Carey appeared pushing an ice cream cart, or Britney Spears’ almost weekly appearances.

The new version bears more resemblance to post-Daly TRL, with five hosts to share the duties. Confirmed thus far are rapper-comedian DC Young Fly and Chicago radio host Erik Zachary, with three more to follow. The relaunch is part of of renewed focus on live TV from the network, being overseen by its new president Chris McCarthy.

TRL airs again in October, eight years and 11 months since the last episode.
