Berlin government invests €1 million in noise protection to safeguard clubs

The Berlin government has pledged a €1 million fund to go towards soundproofing for venues and nearby residential buildings.

According to the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, the money will be spent on noise barriers in outdoor areas and measures such as soundproofing windows. Staff will also be trained to raise awareness on the issue.

Currently, venues experiencing problems, such as noise complaints from neighbours, include the Yaam, the Kulturbrauerei, Johnny Knüppel and Birgit & Bier.

Lutz Leichsenring, spokesman for The Club Commission, said, “In a densely populated city, where residential development is close to music venues, investment must be made in noise protection to ensure coexistence.” The article goes on to state that between 2011 and 2015, approximately 170 clubs have closed.

Recently, London mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled his draft London Plan. The outline includes the Agent of Change principle, which, if implemented, will ensure developers building properties near live venues are responsible for soundproofing measures and the management of noise impact.
