Twitter turned Super Bowl Sunday into #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay

Yesterday (4 February), the 52nd NFL Super Bowl took place at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

The legendary halftime show slot was filled by Justin Timberlake who last week released his fifth studio LP Man of the Woods. As you might remember, the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show was made infamous by an incident where Timberlake – as a guest during Janet Jackson’s show – exposed Jackson’s breast for half a second due to a wardrobe malfunction. Jackson ended up taking a lot of the backlash from the incident and even got banned from a Grammys performance that year. Timberlake picked up a gong at the same award show.

In the lead-up to this year’s Super Bowl, rumours were circulating that Jackson was going to appear as a guest during Timberlake’s performance. She swiftly put these rumours to bed.

But to celebrate the star’s enduring legacy and steal some of the shine from Timberlake, Twitter decided it was #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay and a torrent of celebratory tweets brought the hashtag to be the top trending topic worldwide.
