Yesterday (4 February), the 52nd NFL Super Bowl took place at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The legendary halftime show slot was filled by Justin Timberlake who last week released his fifth studio LP Man of the Woods. As you might remember, the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show was made infamous by an incident where Timberlake – as a guest during Janet Jackson’s show – exposed Jackson’s breast for half a second due to a wardrobe malfunction. Jackson ended up taking a lot of the backlash from the incident and even got banned from a Grammys performance that year. Timberlake picked up a gong at the same award show.
In the lead-up to this year’s Super Bowl, rumours were circulating that Jackson was going to appear as a guest during Timberlake’s performance. She swiftly put these rumours to bed.
But to celebrate the star’s enduring legacy and steal some of the shine from Timberlake, Twitter decided it was #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay and a torrent of celebratory tweets brought the hashtag to be the top trending topic worldwide.

Janet released a whole album, went on tour, decided to PAUSE to have a fresh baby at age 50, dropped that billionaire hub, and went back out on tour like nothing happened.

I’m trying to figure why some folks are calling Janet irrelevant. ‘Unbreakable’ went #1 in 2015. Unbreakable World Tour grossed over $10 million & #SOTW grossed over $30 million. In 2018 she’ll be headlining 2 summer festivals. STFU #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/IcMeukkQ5z

I’ve spent the day trying to decide whether Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet or Velvet Rope is my favourite. Nope! Can’t do it. Each were perfect for the stage of life I was in at the time. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/iJh5EA9fN4

Janet Jackson is highly respected. That is why Justin Timberlake couldn’t get any of his famous friends to make guest appearances during his #PepsiHalftime Show. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/u052cGpvDC

Everything about Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice is beautiful. The braids, alone, are iconic. The outfits. The monologues about Black womanhood, trauma, and grief. EVERYTHING. #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay pic.twitter.com/vmsVm9HTMv
