The first trailer for M.I.A.’s long-delayed documentary is here

Former Crack Magazine cover star M.I.A. has released the trailer for her long-awaited documentary.

Directed by longtime friend Stephen Loveridge, MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. utilises archive footage from the past 20 years of the rapper’s life. Around 700 hours of footage was given to Loveridge from M.I.A. around a decade ago. Presenting an in-depth insight into her upbringing and career, the film promises to be an informative and personal portrayal of the controversial activist’s life.

Earlier this year the film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Documentary Special Award. In an interview with BillboardM.I.A. said, “He took all of my cool out. He took all the shows where I look good and tossed it in the bin.”

“Eventually, if you squash all the music together from the film, it makes for about four minutes. I didn’t know that my music wouldn’t really be a part of this. I find that to be a little hard, because that is my life. It’s not the film that I would have made.”

The documentary is set to be released in UK cinemas on 21 September, and in the US on 28 September. Watch the trailer above.
