In collaboration with the Samaritans charity, our December cover stars IDLES and Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, Crack Magazine are proud to present this special art project centred around our number one track of 2018.
IDLES are a band from Bristol who had a breakthrough in 2018 with their album Joy as an Act of Resistance. Part of their appeal is they way they’ve confronted toxic masculinity in their music. Specifically, their song Samaritans – a rousing anthem confronting the silence surrounding mental health struggles among men and the wider issues that unravel as a result of toxic masculinity.
To celebrate the breakthrough year IDLES have had, we invited Turner prize winning artist Jeremy Deller to listen to Samaritans and create a piece informed by the track. In Deller’s response, eight-year-old Otto Mazzucchelli Canonico has hand-written the lyrics of Samaritans. This artwork will be screen printed for a limited edition run of prints with all profits going to Samaritans. The piece includes signatures from Jeremy, IDLES’ lead singer Joe Talbot and Otto. Limited to 100 editions, they have been hand screenprinted on 270gsm white Smooth Mohawk Options.
It only takes £46 to train and support an existing Samaritans volunteer for a year so we’re really hopeful we can make a difference with this project. You can find out more about the cause in the charity’s most recent Impact Report.
