Jóhann Jóhannsson’s early works and an unreleased score to feature on Retrospective I

Jóhann Jóhannsson

A selection of the late composer’s early works is set to be reissued on Retrospective I.

The classical music label Deutsche Grammophon has announced a two-part retrospective of Jóhann Jóhannsson‘s works, with the first – entitled Retrospective I – set to arrive on 26 April. Retrospective I will feature the Icelandic composer’s early works, spanning seven albums, and his previously unreleased score for the 2012 documentary White Black Boy, directed by Camilla Magid. The CD box will come accompanied by a hardcover book.

Albums selected from Jóhannsson’s discography for the first retrospective include 2004’s Virðulegu Forsetar, the soundtrack album Dís, and 2011’s The Miners’ Hymns. Retrospective II will follow the first release in 2020, and it’ll include his more recent soundtracks for the films Arrival, The Mercy and Orphée.

The award-winning composer was known for his work on The Theory of Everything, Sicario and Arrival. Jóhannsson died in Berlin on 9 February 2018, at age 48. A toxicology report revealed he died from an accidental overdose of cocaine mixed with medication.
