The north London venue was damaged in a fire last night (6 January).

As confirmed by London Fire Brigade, 30% of Koko’s roof was on fire yesterday. The club was undergoing refurbishment at the time. Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters at the scene tackled the fire, and brought it under control in the early hours of today (7 January). No injuries have been reported.

Station Commander Jon Lewis said, “Firefighters quick action and hard work in the early stages meant the fire was contained to the roof and saved the rest of the building. Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the morning.”

The Camden club is famous for hosting musical icons such as Madonna and Prince. The former theatre first opened in 1900, and has undergone several name changes such as the Camden Hippodrome Theatre and Camden Palace.

Update (7 January): Owner Olly Bengough has released a statement. “We are deeply saddened by the fire that took place at Koko last night and pleased to announce there have been no casualties,” he said.

“We want to thank the London Fire Brigade for its quick response and how well it handled the situation,” he added. “The amount of support we have received from the public has been amazing and we’ll be doing our best to get the redevelopment of this iconic building back on-track.”
