FKA twigs details new lockdown album in Louis Theroux podcast

FKA twigs speaks to Louis Theroux in a new podcast episode, out today (25 January).

In December, FKA twigs was announced as one of the guests for Louis Theroux’s BBC Radio 4 podcast, Grounded With Louis Theroux. The episode has been released today, and it features the former Crack Magazine cover star talking about her new album – made during lockdown – and her alleged abusive relationship with Shia LaBeouf.

“Over lockdown, I wrote an album, all over the internet,” she said. “All working with people that I’ve never worked with before. I’ve got more collaborations and features on this album that I’ve ever had before. The majority of the people I’ve never met in real life, but we spent a lot of time with each other over FaceTime. To make an album over FaceTime is the epitome of an artist being isolated and still having the desire to make work. So I felt that I did that.”

During the episode, twigs also spoke about the lawsuit she recently filed against former boyfriend Shia LeBeouf, in which she accused him of physical, mental and emotional abuse. “I felt so controlled and I felt so confused and I felt so low beneath myself that the fear of even leaving and knowing that I had all this work to do to get back to just feeling OK, it was completely overwhelming,” she said. “It felt very impossible. And I’d never had a relationship like this before.” She revealed that, towards the end of the relationship, she “wasn’t allowed to look men in the eye”.

On whether her upcoming album reflects her relationship with LaBeouf, twigs said, “My next music is, ironically, a lot lighter than the usual music that I make, because I think I spent so much time in darkness with him that when I have been in lockdown I’ve been really missing my friends and going out, getting ready and dancing. I’ve wanted to make music for the people closest to me that I love.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she touches upon her relationship with Robert Pattinson, receiving racist comments online and more. You can listen to the full episode here.

The artist took to Instagram yesterday (24 January) to hint that the first single may be released this week.
