Flying Lotus has scored and executive produced a new Netflix anime series entitled Yasuke. The series was created and directed by LeSean Thomas (The Boondocks) and follows the story of the first African samurai. Japanese studio MAPPA is behind Yasuke‘s animation. Its main character is voiced by LaKeith Stanfield of Atlanta and Get Out fame. The series, which consists of six-episodes, was first teased back in 2018.

“There is a serendipitous nature about this project, how an African-American man goes to Japan to live and work amongst the very best in Japanese anime to create an anime about an African who goes to Japan to live amongst the Japanese elite and become a warrior,” explained Thomas in a Netflix blog post. “Part of me deep down feels I was meant to create this adventure series with MAPPA, Flying Lotus, LaKeith & the rest of this talented team.”

Netflix shared a trio of new images from the upcoming series with fans yesterday (9 March) and also announced Yasuke‘s April release date. Flying Lotus also posted the teasers. “Proud to share these first images,” he wrote. “3 years in the making and we are finally here… Honor has a new name.”

Yasuke will be available to watch exclusively on Netflix from 29 April.
