Arca

The artist’s been discussing the pros and cons of digital art and the NFT hype with fans on Discord.

Arca has minted her very first NFT. The artist listed her first piece of one-off crypto art via digital marketplace SuperRare on Friday (9 April). According to the NFT’s description, Rorscharch;KiCk is “the original calligraphy all KiCk typography is sourced from.” Arca is said to have painted each symbol “in sets of three during a trancelike state.”

The reserve price for Rorscharch;KiCk is currently set at 20 ETH, which is around $43,000 at time of writing. The NFT won’t actually be up for auction until the reserve price is met. When that happens, a 24-hour timed auction will begin.

After announcing her new NFT, Arca took to her Mutants1000000 Discord server to discuss the artwork, as well as criticisms surrounding the ecological impact of digital art. Speaking to fans on the server’s #feral-entropy channel, Arca touched on topics such as accessibility and carbon negativity. “I think NFTs can be useful in opening spaces for people to live off of making art in new ways and in [a] more feasible way that has less to do with gatekeeping and the industry and more to do with a collector buying art directly off the artist,” Arca said. Arca also released a second NFT on Friday. Entitled Nonbinary, the piece takes its name from Arca’s 2020 KiCk i album track. The NFT features footage from the single’s Frederik Heyman-directed music video.
