The Japanese studio is known for its delicious-looking animated dishes.

Studio Ghibli is renowned for several things: its beloved characters, its distinctive artistic approach. But the esteemed studio is also known for its tasty-looking food. In a recent AMA – or Ask Me Anything – conducted on Studio Ghibli’s official Twitter account, a fan asked producer Toshio Suzaki: “Why is it that the food that appears in Studio Ghibli movies always looks so delicious?”

In response, Suzaki revealed the inspiration behind the dishes: “It’s because it’s all food that Miyazaki himself has actually made.”

Food is a significant part of the Studio Ghibli universe, and this behind the scenes video shows Miyazaki cooking ramen for the team of animators back when they worked on Spirited Away.

In 2017, the Ghibli Museum hosted an exhibition that celebrated the meals in its films. “Food that is still warm, that looks soft and tender, with the wonderful flavour showing on the faces of those eating them – these scenes of meals are appealing and charming,” reads the exhibition’s description. “No dialogue is needed to convey deliciousness and happiness.”

Earlier this year, a series of images teasing the world’s first Studio Ghibli theme park were released. The forthcoming park, located at the Aichi Expo Memorial Park in Japan’s Aichi prefecture, will open its doors in 2022.
