Charli XCX teases possible collaboration with Rina Sawayama

The How I’m Feeling Now singer hinted to a potential collaboration on Twitter.

Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama may have a new song in the works. The pair have toured together previously, but have yet to share an official collaborative release.

Following the 2021 BRIT Awards on Tuesday (11 May) evening, Charli expressed her admiration for Sawayama’s archive Balmain gown on Twitter. The singer told fans that she “woke up at 5.30am” thinking about it. She soon followed it up with another tweet, writing, “and then we texted about making a song”.

Charli’s been involved in a string of collaborations so far this year. For example, she worked with Bladee and Mechatok on a new remix of the pair’s track Drama, and No Rome and The 1975 as part of their new “supergroup” on track Spinning. Last week, she also linked up with A.G. Cook for a remix of Cook’s 2020 track Xxoplex.

Last year, Rina Sawayama spoke out about the nominations process for the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize. The singer highlighted her ineligibility for the two award shows, despite having lived in the UK for 25 years. In February, she announced that the BPI has changed its rules of eligibility in response to her comments.

“I’m over the moon to share the news that following a number of conversations the BPI has decided to change the rules of eligibility for all nominees for the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize,” she said. “Starting this year, artists (like me) will be eligible for nomination even without British citizenship.”
