The likes of Giu Alfeo, Aboubakry Seck and Marina Correia feature in twigs’ short film, Longboard Family.

FKA twigs has added a skate film, of sorts, to her list of directorial credits. In light of the Tokyo Olympics and the decision to include skateboarding as an Olympic sport for the very first time, Facebook and creative agency Droga5 have launched a new global campaign entitled We Change the Game When We Find Each Other. The campaign aims to highlight the global communities and movements united through the discipline, with a particular focus on how Facebook helps these skate communities stay connected.

As part of the project, Facebook tapped FKA twigs to direct one of its four campaign videos. Her two-minute film is entitled Longboard Family. It features choreography from Mike Tyus and Joy Brown as well as longboarders such as Aboubakry Seck, Giu Alfeo, Ko Hyojoo, Lotfi Lamaali and Marina Correia. The film highlights the art of longboard dancing as well as the ways in which the skaters connect with each other digitally.

“I had the honour of directing this dance video about the longboard community and how they have used a Facebook group to share moves and grow their longboard family,” says twigs in a new Instagram post. “It was so amazing being immersed into their world, and as a movement artist and obsessor myself, I felt humbled by the skill levels and beautiful athletes that I shot.”

In the past, twigs has stepped behind the camera to work on visuals accompanying her own releases. From this year’s Don’t Judge Me, created alongside Emmanuel Adjei, to Magdalene era music videos for tracks Holy Terrain and home with you. Earlier this month, twigs revealed that she had directed a new video for Young label mate Koreless. The White Picket Fence visual marked her first time directing for another artist.
