The new track is the lead single from new album fossora, slated for release on 30 September.
Directed by Viðar Logi, the music video for Atopos features Björk and Gabber Modus Operandi‘s DJ Kasimyn on decks at a trippy, mushroom-filled forest rave. The pair are also joined by a sextet of bass clarinets.
Announcing the video on social media, Björk described Atopos as “fossora‘s passport”. Detailing further, she added, “sonically this is a heavy bottom-ended bass world. We have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub drilling, nesting and digging us into the ground.”
Björk’s upcoming new album will be her first since 2017’s Utopia. In a recent interview, the Icelandic musician explained that fossora was inspired in part by lockdown raves. The record takes its name from a word made-up by Björk which she described as meaning “she who digs.” Alongside Gabber Modus Operandi, the album also features contributions from Serpentwithfeet and El Guincho – who worked on CAPRISONGS with FKA Twigs.
Alongside the new album announcement, Björk has also launched new podcast Sonic Symbolism. Each episode will look into a different record from the musician’s discography.

Gabber Modus Operandi have recently come under investigation follow allegations of sexual abuse. At the end of August, the duo shared that, following the accusations, an external mediator would be investigating the alleged incident and that during this they would be pausing all activity.
