Shovel Dance Collective, MC Yallah and Lankum to play Supersonic Festival

The festival celebrates its 20th edition in Birmigham from 1-3 September.

Supersonic Festival has announced the first names for its 2023 outing. Amongst those confirmed so far is Irish quartet Lankum – who announced their forthcoming new album False Lankum earlier this year – and Nyege Nyege Tapes affiliates MC Yallah and Debmaster. Nine-strong contemporary trad-folk outfit Shovel Dance Collective are also set to perform as are experimental drone metal duo Divide and Dissolve, Horse Lords and Godflesh – aka the industrial metal project featuring Justin K Broadrick.

Taking place in Digbeth, Birmingham, Supersonice Festival will also welcome Avalanche Kaito, Hey Colossus, Josephine Foster, a collaborative performance from BIG|BRAVE and Jessica Moss, Taqbir and 75 Dollar Bill with more joining the bill in the run up to the event.

Reflecting on reaching the milestone of two decades of Supersonic Festival, co-founder and creative director Lisa Meyer said, “In 2003 we naively created our first edition of Supersonic Festival, a one day event that reflected our own curiosity as music fans. This lineup included LCD SoundSystem, Coil and The Bug with the Warrior Queen, set in the warehouse spaces of post industrial Birmingham. The last 20 years have been a right old rollercoaster but we’ve held on with determination. The weight of the pandemic, the political situation locally, nationally and globally and another financial crisis could have done us in for good. Instead we’ve channelled that heavy energy into the festival and look forward to celebrating 20 years, gathering as a global community for one weekend, and joyfully embracing adventurous music.”
