The National Gallery to host Piano Day celebrations in March

The event is curated by FLOAT founder Sofia Ilyas.

Taking place on World Piano Day, which is the 31 March, The National Gallery in London will host a free-entry day of performances inspired by the exhibition After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art currently on show there.

The programme for the day will feature performances from experimental electronic artist Yaw Evans, contemporary classical pianist Karim Kamar and installation artist, educator and beekeeper Lily Hunter Green. The Piano Day event will also host pianist Vetle Nærøand and a collaborative performance from Japanese electronic musician Hinako Omori and contemporary dancer Chihiro Kawasaki of Neon Dance.

The National Gallery’s Piano Day event will run from 12pm to 5pm. Speaking on the forthcoming edition, Ilyas said: “It’s an exceptional lineup of artists pushing the boundaries with bespoke pieces celebrating the piano – expect the sounds of bees emanating from a home found in the instrument, a contemporary dance performed throughout, and much more”.

Ilyas – who is the founder of London-based brand and agency FLOAT – has been organising annual Piano Day events in London and Melbourne since 2016. This year marks her seventh Piano Day. “As a Pakistani woman in the UK fascinated by the history of art since studying an Art A-level, The National Gallery has always been an inspiring and aspirational environment,” she added, on the significance of holding the event at the London gallery this year. “In each visit throughout the years since, whilst growing my career in music, I’ve continued to be in awe of its ability to progress culture and to come full circle and be hosting an event here feels surreal.”
