The currently untitled film will star The Weeknd alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
Oneohtrix Point Never will handle the score for a new film co-written, co-produced and starring The Weeknd. The untitled project will be directed by Trey Edward Shults, who co-wrote the film with The Weeknd and Reza Fahim. As Deadline reports, Oneohtrix Point Never – AKA Daniel Lopatin – will score the film alongside The Weeknd himself, whose appearance will mark his first starring role in a feature film. In 2019, The Weeknd had a cameo in the OPN-scored movie Uncut Gems, made by the Safdie Brothers.
Oneohtrix Point Never and The Weeknd have worked together frequently in the past, with the pair closely collaborating on the latter’s 2022 album Dawn FM. In our Albums of the Year 2022 roundup, we said that “lead producer Oneohtrix Point Never is at the peak of his powers [on Dawn FM], beaming Tesfaye’s vocals through a prism so gloomy and cavernous you forget you’re listening to the second-most streamed artist in the world.”
Last month, Oneohtrix Point Never was spotted in the studio with Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder working on the score for Fielder’s new show The Curse.
