Sinéad O’Connor has died

The Irish singer has passed away aged 56.

News of Sinéad O’Connor’s death has been confirmed this evening (26 July). As the Irish Times reports, the artist’s family have issued a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” it reads. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Born in Dublin on 8 December 1966, the singer, songwriter and activist released 10 studio albums over the course of her career. Her enduring hit Nothing Compares 2 U was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards, also winning the award for Video of the Year at the VMAs that same year.

Irish taoiseach (prime minister) Leo Varadkar is among those who have paid tribute to the late trailblazer saying: “Her music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare.”
