The musician and his bandmates are raising funds to help offset living costs while they can’t return to their home.
Mdou Moctar shared a post via social media explaining that whilst on tour in North America a military coup took place in Niger. On the 26 July, a group of right-wing soldiers overthrew president Mohamed Bazoum and seized power in support of General Abdourahamane Tchiani. As a result, the country’s borders have been closed. In light of this, following their recent US tour which finished on 29 July, Moctar – real name Mahamadou Souleymane – and his two bandmates Ahmoudou Madassane and Souleymane Ibrahim have to remain abroad indefinitely. They are fundraising to offset living costs while they remain in the US.
“Last week while we were on tour our home of Niger was plunged into chaos when a Coup took place,” the Tuareg guitarist shared in post. “As a result, we are unable to return home to our loved ones and must remain abroad indefinitely.” To help with housing costs, living expenses and other essentials as a result of the situation, a GoFundMe has been set up to support the three musicians and their families. “We are so appreciative of our fans and community and their unending support and are so appreciative of whatever you are able to do to help us in this unprecedented and scary time. Thank you so much.”
