The programme features UK premieres of seven new restorations of the American artist’s work.
London arts space the ICA is hosting a retrospective of choreographer, dancer and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer’s artistic works. Running from 17-27 August, the series of events looks at Rainer’s career spanning five decades across film and dance. Known for her minimal and experimental approach, the programme kicks off with a showing of the American artist’s debut feature Lives of Performers which will be followed by a Q&A with Rainer herself.
Following this, other films being shown – which have been restored in 4K – include Rainer’s second feature Film About A Woman Who…, Kristina Talking Pictures and Journeys From Berlin/1971. The latter film screening, which was inspired by her experiences living in West Berlin in 1976 and 1977, will also be accompanied by an intro from writer and lecturer Tom Hastings who is coediting a collection of essays on Rainer.
Completing the ICA’s Yvonne Rainer retrospective, her works The Man Who Envied Women and Privilege will be shown. The closing night of the programme will be a screening of the avant-garde artist’s final film, MURDER and murder – one of Rainer’s most personal works that meditates on female ageing, breast cancer and lesbian sexuality.
After the ICA restrospective comes to a close, these new restorations of Rainer’s work will be presented as a touring programme in partnership with Invisible Women. Head to the ICA’s website for the full programme and tickets.
