The new exhibition at the London gallery space is set to open on 25 January and run until 14 April 2023.

Somerset House has announced its next major exhibition. CUTE looks at the phenomena of cute culture across a range of different channels – including music, fashion, toys, video games and social media – and features contemporary artworks. As part of this, there’ll be a new commission from PC Music affiliate and multidisciplinary artist Hannah Diamond who will present an immersive visual and sonic music installation. This work will feature a curated collection of videos from the likes of Charli XCX, A.G. Cook, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and the late SOPHIE as well as Diamond herself.

Other contributing artists include Juliana Huxtable, Ram Han, Maggy Lee, AYA TAKANO and there will be a video games arcade curated by Now Play This producer Nick Murray. The exhibition is presented in partnership with Sanrio to mark Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary and will also have a plushie space, immersive disco and display dedicated to the character – with rare and unique items related to Hello Kitty from over the years.

CUTE will be laid out around five themes from cute pop culture – Cry Baby, Play Together, Monstrous Other, Sugar-Coated Pill and Hypersonic. The exhibition will also include materials, figurines and sketchbooks from the Yayoi Museum in Tokyo.
