Ukrainian composer and sound artist Heinali – a.k.a. Oleh Shpudeiko – has released a new music video based on an original composition entitled Aves rubrae (“red birds” in Latin). Made by Olbram Pavlíček, the vertical video was born from a 2023 collaboration between the two artists, as part of a SHAPE+ residency at Prague’s MeetFactory art centre. Heinali’s composition was commissioned last year by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City to commemorate a year since the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Heinali improvised and recorded the track in one take using his modular system.

Speaking on the piece and its accompanying visual, Pavlíček said: “When I listened to Heinali’s track for the first time, the sound of organs inspired me to create a vertical video as an examination of spaces with seemingly random narrations. The video comprises three levels: The first one centres around the notion of unlocking, the second one focuses on monumentality, and the third one is an examination of a core. I projected some of my interests in sculpting and put seemingly unrelated objects together to create small side story lines.”
