Nick Cave, Warren Ellis are scoring Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black

The anticipated Amy Winehouse biopic will feature an original score from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Back to Black, the Amy Winehouse biopic directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, is going to be scored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, it was revealed today (Wednesday 7 February).

Cave and Ellis, who are longtime collaborators and have written original scores for The Road, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Blonde, Dias de Gracia among many others, will be providing nondiegetic music, with the soundtrack also featuring a number of Winehouse’s hits recorded by Maria Abela, who has signed on to play the iconic musician.

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson commented in a press release that: “Nick and Warren were the only musicians in my mind to score Back to Black.” 

She continued: “Over the years I’ve listened to everything they’ve composed and longed to realize the dream of working together. Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score.”

She has also shared photos of her in the studio alongside the musicians on Instagram.

Back to Black will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 12 April 2024.
