James K and Pavel Milyakov set to play midsummer prelude concert for Solstice Festival

The prelude concert will take place in Helsinki’s Temppeliaukio Church on 11 June.

Solstice Festival is warming things up early this year. Ahead of its annual descent into the northern wilds of Rukatunturi, the festival is setting the tone with a midsummer prelude concert on 11 June staged in Helsinki’s otherworldly Temppeliaukio Church.

Carved into solid rock with natural light illuminating the space, Temppeliaukio Church will host a live performance from New York artist James K, whose ethereal experimental soundscapes draw from shoegaze, trip-hop, ambient, folk and more. Pavel Milyakov is also set to perform a new live concept that shows a more meditative side to his practice. The show is set to feature collaborative works from Pavel Milyakov and Ukrainian artist Yana Pavlova, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to bring cutting-edge artists like James K and Pavel into a historical landmark venue like this. It couldn’t get much more special than this.” Says Artistic Director Joni Stanley.

Solstice Festival is also set for the return of their themed art programme, which this year focuses on the theme Landscapes: The Imprint of Nature and Humanity. The festival invites attendees to explore the exchange between the land and the people who move through it. Five pieces of work have been selected to be exhibited through an open call and curatorial jury process, showing each artist’s reflection and interpretation of the landscape. This year’s artists are: Aino Seppä & Petriina Kiiskinen, Isto Rahkila, Nastja Säde Rönkkö, Liisa Ryynänen, Alex Domeney, Paavo Pakkanen & Aaron Vartiainen.

Solstice Festival will take place in Ruka, Finland, from 19-21 June.

Tickets for the midsummer prelude live concert are available now via Tiketti and Resident Advisor.
