The Korean-American producer’s next release will land on XL Recordings.
Yaeji has signed to XL Recordings and announced her first full-length mixtape. Entitled WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, it’s slated for release on 2 April.
To introduce the project Yaeji has shared an animated video for the lead single WAKING UP DOWN, which you can watch via the player above. Created by Yaeji, the video features illustrations by her friend Annie Zhao and was produced by Studio Yotta. It’s inspired by classic anime opening sequences and is based on Yaeji’s own character illustrations.
The single WAKING UP DOWN features lyrics in English and Korean, which celebrate small, daily triumphs such as staying on top of to do lists, making home-cooked meals and having empathy for others.
WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던 was produced over the course of two years at Yaeji’s newly-built design and recording studio in Brooklyn. According to Yaeji, the mixtape is about “friendship, family, gratitude and support – support that I’ve felt, that I’ve given, and that we all share.” It features collaborations with US rapper Nappy Nina, performance artist Victoria Sin, producer Shy One and Tokyo DJ YonYon, along with Lil Fayo, trenchcoat and Sweet Pea.
Furthermore, the former Crack Magazine cover star has announced a European and US tour, for which she’ll debut a new live show with dancers, original choreography and stage production.
Since the release of her eponymous EP and her 2017 follow-up EP2, Yaeji has gone on to produce remixes for Charli XCX and Robyn. In January, she took over crackaud.io and curated a week-long series of mixes inspired by the seasons of the year.
