In an interview for i-D, the experimental musician reveals it was Björk who proposed that he sing on his tracks – which he had never done on record before
In an interview with Wolfgang Tillmans, published on i-D today (23 February), Arca reveals that his voice will be on the new album – and it’s all because of collaborator and friend, Björk. The self-titled album will feature the Venezuelan-born producer’s voice for the first time.
“I don’t know if I would’ve ever sung on this record if it weren’t for Bjork,” he tells Tillmans in the interview. “We were in the car together and I had been singing for fun and she turned to me very casually and asked me if I’d ever considered singing on my music. I just dismissed it.”
He then went on to explain, “But then I took her very seriously because I respect her so profoundly as a vocalist. She gave me so much guidance, so I really want to celebrate that when I talk about the record. It was a big deal. She was so nurturing throughout the whole process and I don’t know if I would’ve been so brave to do his without her as a friend.”
The new self-titled album follows his 2015 album Mutant. The first track, Piel, was also shared as part of the big reveal and features the producer’s vocals.
The musician has previously collaborated with Björk on her 2015 album Vulnicura, helping her to co-produce and co-write many of the tracks.
Björk was Crack’s cover star for the August 2016 edition of the magazine. You can read the interview with her here.
