Listen to a playlist of Mathew Jonson‘s best Bandcamp jazz finds
Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.
Whether he’s playing an experimental show, a techno set, or an improvised gig as part of the trio Cobblestone Jazz, Mathew Jonson is perhaps best-loved for his live performances. The Canadian artist has spent over two decades pushing the boundaries of music-making, both in the studio and in front of crowds, remaining loyal to analogue equipment and real-time playing in his approach to both. Jonson’s rhythmic skills, taste and artistic ethos are rooted in his musical education – before getting into electronic sounds, the artist grew up jazz drumming, studying classical piano, and playing drums in a marching band. Now playing his own shows and festivals all over the world, jazz, experimentation, and exploring new sounds still inform the many facets of his work.
Here, the artist puts together a playlist of contemporary jazz finds discovered on Bandcamp.
“This playlist is a kind of stream-of-consciousness excavation – a spontaneous research session through Bandcamp’s offerings, hoping to discover artists and sounds I hadn’t yet encountered. While a couple of tracks were familiar, most were entirely new to me. I spent hours listening, following leads, and immersing myself in a wide spectrum of contemporary jazz,” Jonson explains.
“The result reflects a range of my personal taste, spanning more traditional avenues to the experimental. It’s also a more intimate look at the kind of music I listen to at home with my family, far removed from the electronic music world I inhabit professionally. This playlist is a humble attempt to share just a tiny bit of our daily life here in Lisbon.”

Mathew Jonson will play this year’s edition of Kappa FuturFestival, which takes place between 4-6 July in Turin
