Welcome back to Selections, a series of artist-curated playlists from those in the know.

Having formed out of the ashes of an eight-piece ensemble, Tara Clerkin Trio (f.k.a. Tara Clerkin Band) saw what could have been an ending as an opportunity to shift their sound. With fewer instruments to incorporate, they chose to dive deeper into the worlds of sampling, looping and drum machines, moving away from their original psych rock-influenced sound. Incorporating scattered elements of jazz, minimalism and improvisational noise, their music is in an ever evolving, eye-closing journey into the stranger, lesser tapped parts of our psyche.

In recent times, the three-piece have grown out of Bristol’s underground experimental scene to showcase their music across the world, from Berlin to Osaka. Their live sets, delivered with minimal interruptions and extended grooves, are perhaps the best way to experience their music, but travelling and playing in new places has been a path of learning for the band as well. Sharing some of that knowledge, Tara Clerkin Trio have curated a playlist to celebrate what the three members have learned and discovered on tour.

“There is a lot of good music out there being made all the time,” they say. “On our musical travels we’re lucky enough to meet some very cool people and some of them make some very cool music. Some of this is that music. We give thanks to all the groovy freaks and funky weirdos out there doing their ‘thang’, please consider supporting [them] if you dig.” Listen below.

Tara Clerkin Trio will play at We Out Here, which takes place 15-18 August in Wimborne St Giles, Dorset.
