From Highlife to Hiplife: Mixed by Karen Nyame KG

Hip-Hop Soul Funk Highlife Hiplife

A mid-week treat from Karen Nyame KG, the artist, broadcaster and Rhythm In The City label head whose seductive amapiano remix of Kelela’s Contact has been completely etched in our brains since its release last week.

“This mix is an ode to Ghanaian funk and soul otherwise known as highlife music from the early 70s – a really rich palette of sounds,” says KG on her equally alluring set for our specialist mix series, which lands ahead of a previously-teased new EP entitled Redout next week (4 November) via the RITC imprint, which she launched last month.

“I hop through the timelines and also include tracks from hiplife artists – who went on to modernise the traditional highlife genre from the 2000s onwards,” she tells us. “With hiplife you’ll hear a fusion of local languages like Twi, Ga, and (or) Ghanaian Pidgin English,  in rap or hip-hop format. You will hear recurring themes of signature sweet guitar melodies and grooves in both highlife and hiplife songs.” Tune in for tracks from Ofori Amponsah, Shatta Wale, the late Thomas Frempong and more.
