Crack Mix 583:
Mumdance

Techno Bass Experimental Industrial

Throughout much of the 2010s, Mumdance was one of the UK underground’s most influential and prolific presences. As a producer, collaborations with Logos, Novelist and Pinch along with a run of solo releases on Tectonic, XL and his own imprint, Different Circles, saw him push post-dubstep and grime-influenced bass music towards more hard-nosed, grittier reaches. As a DJ, he contorted ambient, techno, industrial d’n’b and much more to put dancefloors across the world in binds.

But suddenly, in 2019, Mumdance stopped. Taking an indefinite hiatus from the music industry to focus on recovery, he ceased producing music and playing out. He didn’t completely disappear though, releasing a full archive of his music in 2022 featuring 316 hours of his mixes, productions, and other musical work – giving a glimpse into just how prolific he had been.

When he returned to the industry in 2022, releasing his first music in years with solo two-tracker Artificial Intelligence / Jazz Excursion, it brought a wave of excitement. But this time round, he is taking things slower, with a second release, In Love Again / Five Years, coming over a year later in March. He has also returned to the tools, but again at a less frantic rate. Instead of playing all weekend, every weekend, he’s been picking his gigs more carefully, with an upcoming all-nighter lined up at London’s The Lion & Lamb on 25 July.

To celebrate Mumdance’s refreshed output and his new, more considered approach, we invited him to take over the Crack Mix. Over the course of 95 minutes, he gives us an exclusive look into what’s been going on behind the scenes. Packed with forward-thinking, unreleased material, he journeys through weighty sub-bass-led riddims and modern hyperpop-influenced sounds, before closing out with hardcore punk mixed with experimental d’n’b. It’s a reminder of his singular production talent and ear for sound.

Who: Mumdance (real name Jack Adams).

What: Industrial, experimental. I just kind of go by mood. I like emotions in their extremities, and this mix shows the push and pull of that.

Where: This mix was made in London.

When: It’s more a soundtrack for walking around with your headphones on. There is a focus on my new productions and tracks from the forthcoming Ping Volume One compilation on Different Circles.

Why: I like the fact music is about conjuring emotions, feelings, and memories out of thin air. It’s a unique thing to spend time manipulating air vibrations in my studio to get the perfect vibration that mirrors how I am feeling and what I want to communicate. Then, when I have it perfect, I bottle it and broadcast it through a sound system or through the internet for other people to experience, hoping that it will make them feel something as well.
