Nipsey Hussle – Mixed by stephseeks
On 31 March, Grammy-nominated musician and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles. He was 33 years old and coming off the most successful year of his music career.
In 2018 his debut album Victory Lap reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards. Following his death, three tracks from his album have posthumously debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, with the album itself re-entering the Billboard 200, surpassing its previous position and taking the No. 2 spot. In the wake of his passing, there’s been a 508% boost in streams of his songs.
Soon after his death, a petition was started by social and political activist Najee Ali, calling for LA council member Marqueece Harris-Dawson to rename the South LA intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson after Nipsey Hussle. The rapper was well regarded as a philanthropist, known for tackling poverty in his hometown. Harris-Dawson announced on 9 April that the intersection will be named Ermias ‘Nipsey Hussle’ Asghedom Square.
The tributes have continued and they have taken many forms. Acts including Drake and Rihanna have posted their tributes to Nipsey Hussle on Twitter and, according to NME, there is speculation that Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and The Game are working on a track in the studio in commemoration.
Peckham-raised artist stephseeks pays tribute to Nipsey Hussle by producing a mix in honour of his work and legacy. “Enjoy a sweet mix of unknown and popular bangers from the one and only Nipsey Hussle,” she says. “May The Marathon continue… RIP.”
