Jasper James

Though 2015 was undoubtedly something of an annus mirabilis for Jasper James as he notched up an essential mix and an EP on Optimo Trax, the Glaswegian’s recent explosion in popularity belies the decade-plus he has spent slavishly perfecting his craft.

As the son of long-standing Subculture resident Harri, James spent his adolescence firmly entrenched within the Glasgow underground’s inner circle. However, he bears his heritage with an admirable degree of humility, and having scored his first gig at Sub Club before he was old enough to legally drink there it was his alacrity and deftness of touch in the booth that made him a regular fixture at the club.

After being put forward for a prime-time essential mix by former flatmate Jackmaster, James caught the ear of Phonox booker Andy Peyton who promptly snapped him up for a long-term Saturday night residency. James’ contribution to the Crack mix series navigates skillfully through different shades of booming, textural house – a testament to the well-deserved hype.

Jasper James appears at Hideout Festival 26- 30 June.
