BREY

This intriguing young London producer is of Angolan stock, a country which surged to musical prominence with the worldwide popularisation of kuduro with a hearty electro twist in the late 00s. Yet one listen to his Brasil EP, released by Svetlana Industries earlier this year, displays a great deal more subtlety going on here. Yes, there’s hip-shaking, organic percussive clatter, but with an endless supply of soul seeping through and, as the four-track progresses, bold ventures into more punishing breaks and dark, swaying hip hop. Plus, on the impossible-to-ignoreBengela, a brass hook so outrageously striking you’ll struggle to shake it. Having been cherry-picked to join the white-hot wave of UK talent currently signed to PMR, expect to hear more from this deeply inventive and refreshing entry into the UK bass scene.
