Mazes

21 September | Bleach, Brighton

Sunday nights aren’t traditionally known for their supply of excessive rock ‘n’ roll behaviour, but then Mazes don’t seem to be the kind of band who deal in debauchery or unpredictability. Rather, the trio offer a sturdy and reliable performance which sees them embark on an hour-long ride that wasn’t centred on putting on a breathtaking show, but rather towards creating one that speeds along reliably and sees them lock into motorik-inspired grooves.

Since their inception in Manchester in 2009, the band’s output has been prolific, and songs such as Letters between U and V, with its alt-country strut, show how the band have slowly developed since the release of their debut long player A Thousand Heys, while with songs such as Salford their alternative lo-fi embracing roots are kept ever-present.

Mazes inhabit a ground where style and excessive showmanship is nailed firmly into the distant backdrop of what they do – at the forefront always stands the ability to deliver stimulating and idiosyncratic tunes that should always be warmly embraced. There is never anything wrong with that.
