PSYCHEMAGIK

Having just arrived back in the UK from Australia, Crack managed to grab a quick tête à tête with the mind-enhancing disco DJs Psychemagik before they headed out on a grand tour of the States. The globetrotting duo are proving increasingly difficult to pin down, both musically and in the physical realm. So we’re grateful that not only did they make time to chat with us, but that they took the time to recorded exclusive mix for us while on the road. Here’s what the guys had to say about their recent cosmic capers.

Hello Psychemagik!

Hola!

You guys have had a lot of success with your remixes, and so far this seems to be what you’re best known for. Recently you’ve put out a new EP of original material and seem to be shifting focus towards less sampling and edits, was it important to get away from your reputation as remixers?

We’ve always made our own music but the remixes have just taken over lately. It feels good to get original stuff out. The album is going to drop this year and it’ll be full of surprises, we don’t like to be pinned down to one style or genre.

So you still plan to keep up with the edits and remixes too? Or are you losing your love for that part of what you do?

I think as long as we’re offered tracks we dig, we’ll keep up the remix work. Maybe we’ll try and flip the balance more towards our stuff though.

We take it you’re still getting good offers?

We get about five to ten remix requests a week!

Are there any remixes/collabs/edits you’d love to get a chance to do?

David Bowie!

You’re about to embark on a mammoth tour of the states. Is it fair to say that Americans seem to have cottoned on to you guys quicker than over here?

From what our Soundcloud stats tell us, our biggest following is in the USA, which is surprising and exciting. UK comes in a close second.

Why do you think you’ve had such a good reaction stateside, especially when so many UK acts struggle?

Our Dreams remix got a lot of USA blog action, I think a lot of American DJs play our stuff. There seems to be a lot of excitement about our US tour.

What and where was your all time favorite show that you’ve played?

The Island in Sydney was a recent fave, a three hour sunset show for an incredibly clued up and madly up for it crowd of sun drenched rave beauties!

You seem to have a pretty clear idea about you’re specific sound, how would you describe it?

Tropicalcodcosmicafrodiscoyachtboogie.

Sounds about right to us. But with such a diverse sound, where do you take your cues from? There’s definitely reference points from a wealth of old music but also a very modern production sound. Do you take much inspiration from electronic music today?

We are well fed with music old and new alike. We dig medieval folk as much as we do disco, rock, reggae or any deep funky jam that has that unique something that you can’t pinpoint, but gives you goosebumps.

There’s been a lot of talk of your extensive record collection, which has attracted the interest of Fake Blood, Chemical Brothers and even Q-Tip! What’s your most cherished vinyl in the box?

The original Japanese OST of Harold & Maude by Cat Stevens, along with audio perfection this record has a sentimental value which you can’t quantify and an amazing cover!

So what do you guys have planned for the future in terms of the way your sound is going?

It’s always changing but we definitely want to make some deeper and sexier dance music and to just have more fun and freedom in the studio.
